Feathered Beauties in Flight

Look closely and you may be lucky enough to spot the endangered Plain-pouched Hornbill, the rarest of all species of hornbills found in Malaysia, only in Belum, this is the rarest of all species of hornbills found in Malaysia. Another species only found in Belum is the Great Hornbill.

Pulau Banding (Banding Island)
Pulau Banding is a man-made island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. Sitting amidst the million-years old Belum Rainforest, visitors to the island can look forward to indulging in nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements.

Belum-Temenggor Rainforest
Belum-Temengor Rainforest is where the wonders of nature come alive. Over 130 million years of age and encompassing 300,000 hectares, this tropical paradise is home to a vast number of species of animals and plants, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. In fact, scientific studies indicate that this pristine forest, which remains one of the largest untouched forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia, holds enormous potential for the discovery of more biological treasures.

Situated in the state of Perak, at the border of Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand, the stunning landscape of Belum-Temengor Rainforest houses over 3,000 species of flowering plants, including three species of the largest flower in the world – the Rafflesia. It is also the natural habitat of 64 species of ferns, 62 species of mosses, and has a lake that is home to 23 species of freshwater fish and 5 species of turtles. The entire forest complex is approximately four times the size of Singapore, which makes it the ideal place for large animals such as tigers, elephants and rhinoceroses to roam and breed... undisturbed by man.

By Car
Pulau Banding is located within the Belum-Temengor rainforest, which is situated midway between the east and west coasts of Malaysia. The nearest towns to Belum are Gerik in Perak and Jeli in Kelantan, which are connected by the East-West Highway. Driving to Pulau Banding from Kuala Lumpur takes about five hours.

From Kuala Lumpur, take the North-South Highway and head north towards Ipoh. Take the Kuala Kangsar exit and head towards Gerik, bypassing the town of Lenggong. This highway will take you straight to Pulau Banding.

By Bus
